Community Notice - Bear Checks

Over the next few weeks, Millbrook By-law & Public Safety will be conducting bear checks in the Fern South and Spruce Ave areas; if a bear is spotted, By-law Officer Adam Francis will be deploying a bear banger which is a projectile that sounds like a shotgun to try and attempt to scare the bear. Security and RCMP will notify the community via Facebook before deploying the Bear Banger. I appreciate your understanding.

Honouring Mi’kmaw Elder Daniel Paul

Daniel Paul’s portrait by Mi’kmaw artist Alan Syliboy will be displayed at Dalhousie University to honour his enormous contributions to the recognition and understanding of the history and continued significance of the Mi’kmaq people regionally and nationally.

Mi’kmaw elder, author, editor, and activist Daniel Paul has made an indelible mark in Canadian history and the history of Turtle Island, as the author of his ground-breaking book, We Were Not the Savages, which is now in its fourth edition. This authoritative version of Mi’kmaq history challenges conventional versions of Canadian colonial history by exposing the violence inflicted on Mi’kmaq populations from the beginning of European colonization of the New World to the present. Daniel Paul has fundamentally changed how we understand Canada’s origins and the complex roles and sophisticated social, political, economic and cultural structures of the Mi’kmaq people. He was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer; the portrait of Daniel Paul by talented Mi’kmaw artist, Alan Syliboy will provide a lasting tribute to Paul and his singular impact on Canadian history.

Our goal is to raise $8500 for this commissioned portrait. Any extra funds raised will be put toward a scholarship to be established in Daniel Paul’s honour at Dalhousie.

Dedication ceremony for Indigenous healing garden at Colchester East Hants Health Centre

MEDIA RELEASE

Dedication ceremony for Indigenous healing garden at Colchester East Hants Health Centre

Monday, Oct. 24, 2022

On Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022, a dedication ceremony will be held for the Indigenous healing garden at Colchester East Hants Health Centre in Truro beginning at 1:00 p.m., with people gathering at 12:30 p.m. in tents set up in the parking area adjacent to the hospital. Following the dedication ceremony, small group visits to the garden will be offered.

This is the first Indigenous healing garden of its kind within a hospital in Atlantic Canada. The initiative is the culmination of a partnership between the family of John C. Gloade of Millbrook First Nation and Colchester East Hants Health Central to transform the hospital’s healing garden into a memorial Indigenous healing garden. The ceremony will honour the life of Sheila Rose Gloade and dedicate the garden in her memory as a place within the hospital where patients, their families, and staff can find peace and tranquility.

The Indigenous health garden now contains traditional Indigenous symbols of healing that have been part of the Mi’kmaq culture for many centuries. The space is available to all clients of the hospital and provides a place for prayer and traditional Mi’kmaq ceremonies related to healing.

Please note:

o          Public parking is available in front of Colchester East Hants Health Centre.

o          Masks will be required when moving through the hospital to reach the garden.

Please contact our media relations team if you plan to attend or if you have questions about the event at NSHAmedia@nshealth.ca.

Presence of an endangered North Atlantic Right Whale

Due to the presence of an endangered North Atlantic Right Whale near Tiverton, Nova Scotia, Millbrook Fisheries is strongly recommending the use of whale-safe gear on all ropes associated with Millbrook community FSC trap fisheries in the vicinity of Saint Mary’s Bay and the Bay of Fundy portions of LFA 34 affected by this commercial fishery closure. Weak links can be obtained directly from Millbrook Fisheries, which will allow ropes to break away in the event of whale entanglement.
