Description of the program: The Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program is a national program that offers Aboriginal people the opportunity to work as sworn supernumerary peace officers with members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The program targets Aboriginal applicants from all across Canada who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement or a career in a related field in criminal justice. The program pays an hourly wage and runs from May until August. It provides Aboriginal people with exposure to some facets of police work. The 2009 Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training program will begin in the month May for duration of 17 weeks. The first three weeks are spent at the RCMP Training Academy (Depot) in Regina gives students an introduction to RCMP cadet training. Depot provides students with the opportunity to learn what it takes and would be like to be a police officer. The Training at Depot focuses on teaching Aboriginal people problem solving skills utilizing CAPRA, a problem solving approach used nationally by RCMP members. CAPRA engages all stakeholders to work collaboratively with each other to resolve community problems in partnership, law enforcement, public speaking, cultural diversity and training on how to facilitate Safe Community Workshops in their community. Furthermore, students participate in physical fitness and foot drill activities. The fitness instructor provides students with strategies to reaching their personal fitness goals and teaches techniques to the equipment used for the RCMP entrance fitness test. In foot drill, students learn the importance of team work. Once the students successfully graduate from the RCMP Training Academy in June, they continue the additional 14 weeks at a detachment stationed near their home communities. While the students are at their placement they learn to identify their strengths and weaknesses through constructive advice, guidance, monitoring and encouragement from seasoned police officers. The duties and activities that the students engage in are at the discretion of the detachment commanders. The duties that the students participate in are under close supervision to ensure they are not exposed to any hazardous situations. Students' activities and duties vary depending on the need of each region.
