December 6 Honouring Mi'kmaq from Tuft's Cove

Dartmouth, NS – On December 6, 2007 at 8:45 am, members of the Mi’kmaq community will gather to honour and remember family members who perished as a result of the Halifax Explosion.

Most of the victims were living in an area called Tuft’s Cove, the last Mi’kmaq community in the Halifax/ Dartmouth area. It was, perhaps, the oldest permanent Mi’kmaq Community, some say, older than that of the City of Halifax. It was destroyed and many Mi’kmaq men, women and children perished. This community was devastated on that day, only weeks before it was to be expropriated and families removed.

There will be a small ceremony at which time the names of the victims will be read out loud by relatives and friends from the community.

Meet at the Shannon Park Elementary School Parking Lot
