IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FIRST NATION ALLIANCE TO BUILD CAPACITY

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA (July17, 2006) -- Lloyd Johnson, Senior Economic Development Officer of Millbrook First Nation and Gerry Lesage, President/General Manager of the Garden River Development Corporation, today jointly announced a Strategic Alliance Agreement between their respective First Nation communities.  The agreement is part of a national strategy to increase the capacity and ability of First Nation, Métis and Innu communities to pursue economic opportunities in knowledge based industries by leveraging technology.

The Strategic Alliance Agreement will facilitate a technology transfer agreement and the establishment of Garden River Technologies.  Initial projects include the creation of a virtual campus that will deliver online programs in areas such as health and safety as well as personal and professional development courses.

To inaugurate the online learning project, Mr. Johnson and Mr. Lesage announced an agreement with Dr. Larry Thomas to build an eight module course on Effective Board Governance.  Dr. Thomas is a board trainer, consultant, and speaker with a Doctor of Education degree from Seattle University and over twenty years experience consulting a wide variety of non-profit boards.  Once the course is ready it will be delivered through the respective learning portals.

Through the Strategic Alliance Agreement, Millbrook First Nation, located in Truro, Nova Scotia, and Garden River Development Corporation of Garden River First Nation, Ontario, are taking a leading role in the development of programs that will enhance the capacity of all Aboriginal communities in the twenty-first century.

Development is underway and will be officially launched at the annual Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers (CANDO) October 2, 2006 in Saskatoon.
