RBC Recognizes Two Aboriginal Leaders as 2010 Olympic Torchbearers

MILLBROOK, NS October 22, 2009 — Two outstanding individuals, who are leaders in the Aboriginal community, have been selected by RBC as 2010 Olympic Torchbearers.

“I am excited and honoured to be part of something so extraordinary as the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay and I want to thank RBC for this opportunity,” says Joan Glode, Executive Director of the Mi’kmaq Family and Children’s Services of NS (Shubenacadie).  “ I have been a fan of the Olympics for several decades and always take part of my vacation to watch them on television. This time, it will be even more special as I will be contributing to a portion of the event!”

Chief Lawrence Paul also holds the Olympic Games close to his heart.   “I am honoured to be part of this universal event. And I’d like to thank RBC for this opportunity. I hold the Olympic games close to my heart and it’s a great event to get various people to participate in Canada from all over the world.” says the Paul who has served as the Chief of Millbrook First Nation since for over 25 years.

“We are pleased to announce both Chief Paul and Joan Glode as 2010 Olympic Torchbearers.  Their contributions to Millbrook First Nation and Shubenacadie First Nation are helping build a lasting legacy for these communities and for all of Canada,” says Stephen Slauenwhite, RBC Regional Vice President of Commercial Banking for Nova Scotia. “Chief Paul and Ms. Glode are an inspiration to us all and demonstrate how each of us can make a difference. To be part of the Olympic Torch Relay is a unique and exciting opportunity and RBC is proud to offer Canadians a chance to participate in the Olympic celebrations and share in the Olympic Spirit.”

Residents of Colchester County are encouraged to come out and cheer on the torchbearers as they make their way across Canada in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay. The Olympic Flame will pass through Truro and Shubenacadie on  November 18, 2009.

Approximately 12,000 Canadians will carry the flame across the country with millions more cheering and supporting them. The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will begin its journey to Vancouver on October 30, 2009, when the flame arrives in Victoria following a traditional lighting ceremony in Greece. The Olympic Flame will then travel from coast to coast to coast through every province and territory in Canada – spanning 45,000 kilometers and over 1,000 communities over the course of 106 days.

It will end at B.C. Place on February 12, 2010, with the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, signaling the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

As Canada’s longest-standing supporter of the Canadian Olympic Team since 1947, RBC is a Premier National Partner of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and proud to bring the Olympic Spirit to communities across Canada as presenting partner of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay.
