Loretta's Profile
Ms. Loretta Bernard has served the Millbrook Community as Band Councillor since 1996 and has also been been employed as the Millbrook Band Council's receptionist since 1999.
A mother of two and a Grandmother of two, Loretta comes from a large family of six other siblings. Raised in the Millbrook Mi¹kmaw Community, Loretta has had the opportunity to watch firsthand the growth of the community over the past few decades.
Loretta was crowned Miss Indian Princess in 1974 and then went on to represent Nova Scotia Mi¹kmaw Communities at a National Pageant held in British Columbia. Loretta’s previous employment history includes a Licensed Hair Dresser, Front Desk Reception as well as a craftsperson with a specialty in leather work.
An advocate of Mi'kmaw Women's rights, Loretta found herself on the outside of her own community when she married a non-native man and was forced to give up her status as a Mi¹kmaw woman in 1981. Shortly after regaining her status in 1985. Bernard and fellow band member Blanche Mousseau successfully launched and won a discrimination suit against the Millbrook Band Council after they and other women were wrongfully treated.
Fairness and equality are two of the main values Loretta lives by and certainly how she represents you as a member of the Millbrook Band.
